This Powerful Digimon Has The Coolest Evolution Line BY FAR (2)

The Digimon franchise has enjoyed tremendous success over the years since its humble beginnings as a series of digital pets (similar to Tamagotchi pets), incorporating everything from multiple anime series, video games and manga that feature its signature digital monsters. Created by Akiyoshi Hongo in 1997, Toei Animation and Bandai jumped on the Digimon bandwagon, helping to expand its reach far beyond Japanese shores to a global market, diversifying its products and creating a franchise that earned more than $500 million in sales by 2000 alone.

The premise of Digimon hinges on the titular Digimon, the shortened name for Digital Monsters. With so many Digimon joining the ever-growing ranks of Digimon creatures in the Digital World, and with a progressive level-up system similar to Pokémon, fans naturally gravitated toward their favorites. Yet one Digimon has emerged as both one of the strongest and coolest, especially when it comes to its full Digivolution line. Reigning as the unofficial king of Digimon, Agumon and his line towards the magnificent Omnimon easily cinch this coveted spot by sporting the coolest branch from Rookie to Mega.

Digimon Evolutions (or Digivolutions), Explained

A Digimon’s Digicore allows it to Digivolve into a stronger fighter, but the series itself has Digivolved the concept of Digivolutions many times.

Digivolutions Allow Digimon to Tap Into Stronger Power

A Digimon Digivolves When They Collect Enough Data

Like Pokémon, Digimon can similarly transform into stronger versions, allowing them to perform better in combat against stronger opponents in a process known as Digivolution. Unlike Pokemon, however, the Digivolution process holds a more intricate and complex set of rules that make it drastically different from a Pokemon’s evolution. For starters, Digivolution occurs when a Digimon has downloaded enough data into themselves to trigger the change, and the transformation falls off again once the Digimon loses enough data to drop them below that threshold, in a process known as Dedigivolution. Further, Digivolution occurs in stages, with the title showcasing a rough estimation of how much data — and therefore how strong — the Digimon is. The main Digivolution stages, in order, include Fresh, In-Training, Rookie, Champion, Ultimate, and Mega.

From iconic ones like Agumon to the smartest ones like Tentomon, these are the best rookie digimon in the franchise.

Another way that sets Digivolutions apart is that they can fork into different paths, thanks to the different types of Digivolutions. Some Digivolutions types include DNA Digivolutions, which merge together two entities into a single Digimon, or even Armor Digivolution, where the Digimon taps into an external Digi-Egg to trigger their transformation without needing to download additional data. Thanks to these forking paths, a Rookie Digimon can Digivolve into many different lines, allowing them to adopt a form that best suits their current situation. With these different branches, the progression becomes more complicated and markedly different compared to Pokémon. In Pokémon, a Pikachu will only ever evolve into a Raichu (if they evolve at all), but in Digimon, a Gatomon could potentially Digivolve into an Angewomon or a Nefertimon, depending on the Digivolution type and other external factors.

The human children who pair up with Digimon partners, sometimes known as the Digidestined, can influence a Digimon’s Digivolution process greatly. When a Digidestined uses a Digivice, the Digimon can temporarily tap into the power supplied by the child, rather than having downloaded enough data to Digivolve naturally. This grants the Digimon a fleeting boost, allowing them to Digivolve for a time, until the child’s energy is depleted, and then the Digimon reverts back to the stage they’ve reached naturally (which is often the Rookie stage). This is best seen when Agumon (a Rookie stage) Digivolves into Greymon (a Champion stage), then reverts back to Agumon, but when Gatomon (a Champion stage) Digivolves into Angewomon and reverts back, she goes to Gatomon rather than her Rookie form of Salamon.

The Best Digimon Line Starts with Agumon

Agumon Serves as the Unofficial Mascot for the Digimon Franchise

As a Reptile Type, Agumon sports a dinosaur-like design with his bipedal framework, sharp claws on his claws and paws, and the pointy teeth in his massive mouth. He typically looks bright orange in color, with vivid green eyes. He’s of the Rookie level, giving him plenty of options and routes for moving upward as he Digivolves. As the partner Digimon for Tai from the original Digimon Adventures anime decades ago, Agumon has stepped up as the unofficial mascot for the Digimon franchise, as he’s largely one of the more recognizable Digimon out there.

Amidst a sea of legendary digivolutions, a few underrated transformations go undetected.

Given that the Digimon franchise largely revolves around different Digimon duking it out, a sharp battle prowess and aggressive design is needed for their mascot, which Agumon delivers in spades. His signature Pepper Breath attack sees the Digimon spitting a large ball of flame at his foes — or the Triple Bird Flame where three different Agumon fuse their Pepper Breaths together to create a massive and devastating sphere of fire. Similarly, the Sharp Claw attack consists of a devilish swipe from his massive claws. With its fierce affinity for battle and its potential, Agumon easily stands out as one of the best Rookie Digimon around.

As for his relationship with Tai, Agumon worked alongside the unofficial Digidestined leader to help bring peace to the Digital World and the Real World. Full of courage, gumption, and a strong loyalty to defend Tai and the other Digidestined, Agumon managed to tap into his own bravery — as well as Tai’s — to achieve some truly remarkable Digivolutions that easily landed him on the top of list when it comes to the coolest Digivolution lines.

Agumon’s Digivolution Line was Shown in Digimon Adventures

The Straightforward Line is the Best One

Given that Digimon hold the ability to Digivolve into different and divergent paths, Agumon’s line can be less straightforward than those more accustomed to their Pokémon cousins. Thanks to the branching nature of Digivolutions, and the ways in which outside factors can influence those paths, Agumon could potentially Digivolve into all sorts of different species, with some of those options being Tyrannomon, Tuskmon or even Numemon. This is teased in the anime itself, when Tai’s negative emotions influence Greymon’s Digivolution into SkullGreymon, rather than the desired MetalGreymon. Yet as the original Digimon anime series showed, Agumon’s direct Digivolution path offers some of the best Digivolutions out there, combining sheer power with the most stylistically cool designs to produce an absolutely stellar lineup.

In one of his next Champion Digivolutions, Agumon Digivolves into Greymon. Sporting a bigger design of the same dinosaur-like, bipedal framework of Agumon, Greymon now dons a dark brown helmet and has neon blue tiger stripes covering his body. He undergoes a massive size-growth as well, which tends to correlate with its increase in power and aggression. Yet it also receives a boost in intelligence as well, allowing Greymon to perform better strategies and tactics in battle. Some of Greymon’s signature moves include Nova Blast, which shoots a massive flame shot from its mouth that’s capable of reducing anything it touches into ash, and its Great Horns Attack, where it strikes and impales its enemies with the massive, hardened horns atop its head. In the original anime series, Tai lent Agumon enough strength to Digivolve into Greymon thanks to his Digivice.

The next stage of Digivolution sees the Champion Greymon Digivolve into the Ultimate stage of MetalGreymon. The version fans of the original Digimon series would most widely recognize is the Vaccine attribute form, which retains the orange and blue coloring, instead of the Virus form, which takes on a darker purple scheme to indicate its more nefarious tendencies. MetalGreymon joins the ranks of the Cyborg type in this Digivolution, as evident from its metal arm, helmet and breastplate that now are fused with its physiology. Massive wings, which are a shade of purple and sport rips and tears in them, sprout from its back. Its new attacks include the Giga Blaster, where it fires organic missiles from the hatch compartment inside its chest, and the Mega Claw, where it launches its metallic claw out and reels it back in with the tethered cord connecting it. In the original anime series, Tai needed both his Digivice and his Crest of Courage to enable Greymon to reach this Ultimate form.

WarGreymon is the Mega Digivolution form of Agumon’s coolest Digivolution line. Instead of growing even bigger, WarGreymon shrinks down somewhat in size, even as his power skyrockets and its speed improves. It takes on a humanoid figure, albeit with its strong dinosaur identity still very much present in its design. Largely considered to be one of the strongest dragon warrior types, WarGreymon is clad in golden Chrome Digizoid armor, complete with massive claws for slashing and a giant shield on its back that sports the symbol of the Crest of Courage. Some of its noticeable attacks involve its Terra Force, which concentrates and condenses energy within the atmosphere into a massive ball that WarGreymon can hurl at its opponents, and Great Tornado, where he spins around at such a speed that he effectively strikes with the might of a tornado. In the original anime series, Tai managed to unlock this Digivolution thanks to a divine prophecy that required Angewomon to shoot Tai, triggering Agumon’s transformation.

Omnimon Serves as the End Point of Agumon’s Digivolution Path

Omnimon Boasts Further Forms

This Powerful Digimon Has The Coolest Evolution Line BY FAR (10)

Omnimon serves as the final point in the coolest Digivolution line, perfecting what Agumon started by serving as one of the most powerful Digimon in the Digital World. WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon DNA Digivolve into Omnimon, combining their powers together to produce a Digimon far stronger than either on their own. With an aesthetic that looks like a white knight, Omnimon features the metal head plates of WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon on each of its hands, while also bearing Tai’s Crest of Courage and Matt’s Crest of Friendship — two main characters from Digimon Adventures with a complicated relationship — on its shoulder pauldrons. It is equipped with its Transcendent Sword and Brave Shield Omega in its WarGreymon left arm and its Supreme Cannon and missiles in its MetalGarurumon right arm. Heralded as a Legendary Warrior and one of the Royal Knights from Digimon lore, it stands as one of the most inspiring and intimidating warriors to take to the battlefield, fighting to uphold the powerful wills of all those who wish for good to triumph over evil.

As Digivolutions can branch, twist and double-back in a unique way reminiscent of a network, Omnimon is capable of producing different versions of itself to best combat any challenge it faces. By DNA Digivolving with Hououmon, Rosemon, HerculesKabuterimon, Vikemon, Seraphimon and Magnadramon, Omnimon can achieve Onminon Merciful Mode. This Holy Warrior type receives a pure white aesthetic overhaul while sprouting angelic wings from its back. Further, it increases its energy, and can use its Fearsome Blade and Graceful Canon to destroy any opposition in its path. If Black Digitron is mixed in with an Omnimon while it's in the process of Digivolving, then Onmimon Zwart is created instead, who stands as an ominous black knight to Omimon’s typical white knight form. Omnimon can also mode change into Omegamon Alter-S, which comes from a DNA Digivolution by merging BlizGreymon and CresGarurumon.
